I am a painter. I create illusions, moods and atmospheres. I use traditional materials of canvas, oils, and fiber, but do not always work in traditional methods. I also use the current technology in much the same manner that other technologies before it have been used by the artist. The artist has always worked within the capabilities of the medium and adapted to the way the medium works. Many of my paintings are scanned into the computer and are born anew as cyber art of the Third Millennium.

In my oil and acrylic paintings I use multi-layering techniques that begin with bright cadmium colors, and allow the transparent hues of my limited palette to create the nuances of colors in the process. For several years, I have painted the organic elements of this planet and the universe beyond. My early work in portraitures recurs from time to time within my original paintings on silk and other fabrics.

I was introduced to the computer as an art medium in 1989, and have devoted much of my creative energies to this ever-changing process. A fellow digital artist wrote this: “Donnalee owns a bit of the compass, which says a lot when confronted by a universe of possibilities. What if the Oregon Trail pathfinder had come with infrared night vision? We all stand at the Twenty-first Century trail head . . . some stand closer, more up front, some with purpose and credentials, some arrive by the press of the crowd. Donnalee survives to explore and to share and you would be most gratified by parting the crowd and welcoming her through.” Many of my computer images are available as archival prints on velvet paper and on silk fabric editions.

Some of my paintings are three-dimensional. I weave strips of canvas, often combining these with Plexiglas or metal armatures into mixed media paintings of brilliant colors and wonderful textures. These dimensional constructions, as well as the colorful alterative landscape silk paintings are my specialties.
